My first TICONDEROGA pencil
The first resource I am going to review is the pencil my little one is using. As trivial as it looks , a good pencil is essential to develop a good grip leading to good handwriting. A toddler's hand bones are not fully developed like an adult's and hence they cannot hold/grip anything with the same steadiness as an adult or in fact even like a 6yr old (when most of the bones develop).
So thus began my search for the appropriate instrument for my lil bub which would start her journey into the world of learning. After much research online and reading a lot of forum posts, I realized toddler pencils need to have the following characteristics:
1. Need to be larger for better grip
2. The nib needs to be sturdy and not break often (this is hazardous for young kids)
A chance trip to target and the stationary aisle there led me to My first TICONDEROGA pencil . I got a set of 5 pencils and it had an attached sharpner too.
The pros and cons of this pencil:
1. Larger than regular pencil for better grip
2. The nib seldom breaks
3. Toddler friendly
On the whole I felt this was a great buy and my toddler found it very easy to grip and start using.
The other alternative to this pencil would be the pencil grippers. I tried those also but my toddler found using that cumbersome and preferred just this pencil as compared to an extra apparatus on the pencil. I've included the pictures and links for both the products below.
There is a variant of the my first pencil called the "My first tri-write pencil". This pencil has a triangular shape for better grip apart from incorporating all the features of a regular my first pencil. I am yet to try this one , as my child is comfortable with the regular pencil. But I feel this would be better for beginners who are just starting out.
